Your Skingredients Skincare Routine, Step By Step

If you’re struggling with your Skingredients skincare routine, it’s worth taking a moment and imagining your dinner plate (a favourite pastime of everyone at Nerd HQ). It’s probably a lovely rainbow of things which are good for you; your protein, your good fats, your vitamins, minerals and all the bits and pieces that have made you grow up so big and strong. Well, when it comes to Skingredients, we’ve got you covered – it’s not quite meat and two veg (we trialled that, couldn’t get the roast chicken to stick to our faces), but has all the goodness of a perfectly balanced meal, except for your face … and it’s vegan, too!

Nutrition and good skin health go hand-in-hand. You are, in lots of ways, just like a car – you wouldn’t put the wrong petrol into yourself and expect optimal performance! Your skin is an organ and feeds off the fuel you put into yourself, so it’s integral that you eat enough protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.

Your skin needs many of the same things as your body. Essential fatty acids, which benefit you from the inside-out, as well as when applied topically –  vitamin A, vitamin C, hydration… The list goes on.

Skingredients is made up of the Core 4 and Mix + Match. This is a collection of the four products which everyone should be using. It forms the essentials kit, your bread and butter, what you should be using every single day, AM and PM.

We even numbered them to make it as easy as 1-2-3-4. But if you’re still at sea, then look no further – we’re about to lay down exactly how and when you use every bit to keep that skin of yours healthy, happy and positively glowing.

Your Skincare Routine, Step By Step

how to cleanse

Cleansing

Cleansing creates a clean and fresh base, leaving your skin ready for serums, free of dead skin cells, pollution particles, old SPF and makeup.

Start by pre-cleansing with a Cleanse Off Mitt: the 00 to the 01, 02, 03 and 04 of Skingredients. You can do this by saturating your Cleanse Off Mitt in warm water, and sweeping the mitt in gentle circles from the centre of your face outwards.

When you’ve pre-cleansed, turn the mitt over, and pop a euro-coin sized amount of Skingredients PreProbiotic Cleanse onto the clean side of your COM. You could massage the product into your skin with your bare hands, if you prefer, but we may judge you (joking).

Work this into your skin for at least 60 seconds, from your nipples (oo-er) all the way up to your hairline, before washing it off thoroughly with your Cleanse Off Mitt – nobody wants the “down-to-elbow” drip, or a bathroom floor which could rival a river.

Skingredients PreProbiotic Cleanse is skin-soothing and works to give back to your skin instead of simply stripping good stuff away. You can use your PrePro every day, and it’s suitable for even the most sensitive of skins. It was created to be usable in conjunction with exfoliating cleansers, which for the most part should not be used everyday – shiny, over-exfoliated skin is not a look we are supporting.

Pre-Serum

Time to move to number 2 in the range – Skingredients Skin Veg. Skin Veg is a pre-serum and penetrant enhancer, formulated to hydrate your skin with hyaluronic acid, and with our patented PRO-COLL-ONE+ collagen peptide, it’ll even improve collagen production. Your skin will be fed lovely antioxidant-rich veg extracts, too (clue’s in the name). You apply this baby from the nipples to the hairline too, post-cleanse.

Massage one pump into your skin, and finish your application with light tapping motions like those clever Koreans.

As a pre-serum, it prepares your skin for maximum absorption of the products to follow. Yes, it may sound like a spin, but it truly isn’t. Skin Veg contains polyhydroxy acid, a milder but incredibly effective form of exfoliating acid that simultaneously very gently exfoliates whilst hydrating the skin. This is what allows serums and other products to penetrate better after you’ve applied Skin Veg!

Serum

skingredients serum

On to number 3: Skingredients Skin Protein. If this isn’t your first skincare rodeo, you’ll know that we are highly committed to serum use. Vitamin A is essential for the function of all the cells in our skin, and deficiencies in it makes for coarse and dull skin. If you’re deficient in vitamin A, you might find that the skin’s natural proliferation process is affected, and it could make you more prone to skin pigmentation or acne. Topical application of Vitamin A will speed up cell renewal and speed up the process of skin proliferation. It can help to normalise sebaceous activity, as well as work to increase skin thickness, and promote collagen production

However, Skingredients Skin Protein has got you sorted, with a blend of Vitamin A, C, and E. It’s also got a patented collagen peptide which will reduce the appearance of fine lines and ageing, as well as rooibos and green tea extract, in case you were worried that you weren’t getting enough antioxidants, which protect your skin from the free radical damage that can accelerate how quickly your skin ages . It works to tighten, brighten and smooth the skin of all non-pregnant hoomans.

Apply one pump of Skingredients Skin Protein from the nips up, and massage it into your skin, making sure you get it all the way up to your hairline, and take care to pay attention to the areas around your eyes, nose, and lips.

SPF

Unless you’re using Skingredients Skin Good Fats from the Mix + Match range, the serum step concludes your Skingredients night-time routine, sadly, but don’t worry – for your day-time routine, SPF is always the final step. Even though all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey. Every. Single. Day.

Skingredients Skin Shield SPF 50 PA+++ provides broad-spectrum protection, meaning you’re protected against UVA, UVB and even HEV rays. Going out without your SPF is equivalent to leaving the house without a coat in a snowstorm. Doesn’t seem clever, does it?

Skin Shield is light and moisturising, and provides a perfect base for your makeup, too. If you’re not a daily makeup wearer, it provides you with a hint of a tint plus acts as a moisturiser to nourish and help to protect your skin.

Apply half a teaspoon to your face and neck, and don’t forget your ears! Press, don’t rub, for maximum efficacy. Some believe rubbing causes mechanical ageing and irritation too … just sayin’.

Skincare Routine for Skin Concerns

Skingredients Mix + match

Mix + Match

The Mix + Match products are designed to customise your skincare routine to your specific skin.

We feel that clinging to the attributes of your skin type rather than assessing the needs and concerns of your skin as they occur isn’t the best plan. It’s useful to know if you have dry or oily skin, but it’s more useful still to be able to pinpoint the skin concerns which you’re facing, whether they’re a case of dehydrated skin, congestion, premature ageing or any other niggle which you’re keen to address. The Mix + Match range is designed to provide targeted care for your individual skin concerns, to be used in addition to your Core 4 routine.

Sally Cleanse

Skingredients Sally Cleanse is a favourite of many, but particularly those who are spot-prone or who overproduce oil. It contains 2% salicylic acid, which is the highest percentage which can be sold in cosmetics within Europe. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy, and as such, it can dissolve the excess sebum and dead skin which build up in your pores and blocks them. These blocked pores could lead to black and whiteheads, but not with Sally around. Sally Cleanse is one tough cookie, so we don’t recommend that you use it more than once every three days.

You can use Sally after pre-cleansing once every three days. Apply a coin-sized amount and massage into skin for 60 seconds, before washing it off. If your skin is particularly reactive, you can mix Sally with Skingredients PreProbiotic Cleanse to mitigate its acidity and provide a gentler cleanse.

You can also use Sally Cleanse once a week as a micromask. Leave it on your skin for two minutes after you’ve massaged it in, and then remove it with a damp Cleanse Off Mitt

If you’re looking to Sally to zap some spots, apply it directly to the spot in question for three minutes, before removing.

Skin Good Fats

This is particularly useful for the hoomans amongst us who suffer from particularly dry, itchy, irritated, flaky, patchy or dehydrated skin, and are looking for a little extra help to keep their skin full of essentials fats and vitamins. Skingredients Skin Good Fats contains Ceramide NP, which helps to improve the barrier function of your skin, and improves the look and feel of really dry skin. You can use this one as a night cream, post-serum. If you have particularly dry, dehydrated or reactive skin, you could use a smidge as a moisturiser pre-SPF during the day.

Mature skin tends to love Skin Good Fats because as we age, our sebaceous glands (the pumps that create sebum, or oil) slow down. Without enough oil, skin becomes more prone to feeling tight, dry and being less protected from the elements. You’re best to apply one pump in outward circular motions from (you guessed it) the nipples all the way up to the hairline.

A-HA Cleanse

A-HA Cleanse contains lactic acid and polyhydroxy acid (PHA), both of which promote exfoliation, and lactic acid which is a hydrating alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It helps to brighten, exfoliate and hydrate skin, but avoid your eyes with this one!

You can use A-HA every night, or use it as your pre-cleanse with the help of a COM.

How to Introduce Skingredients to Your Skincare Routine

You might already have a skincare routine which you’re fond of and loathe to give up. Luckily, if you want to introduce Skingredients into your routine, it couldn’t be easier! Skingredients can fit flush with your preferred products, so you can see how it works for you.

If you’re a big fan of toners or essences, both of these can be used pre-Skin Veg. The latter can even be mixed with it.

If you’re using Sally Cleanse or A-HA Cleanse, we recommend that you don’t use your exfoliating toner. This is because both Sally and A-HA work to chemically exfoliate your skin and slough off the dead skin cells. You could risk over-exfoliation if you use them all at once. If you do decide to use them, only use them once or twice a week to begin with, and see how your skin responds.

Skingredients Skin VegSkingredients Skin Protein and Skingredients Skin Good Fats are all eye-safe, so they can be used as eye-creams if you wish, and we recommend you take advantage of this and save yourself some bills. They contain the same ingredients that results-driven eye creams do (hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, vitamin C, peptides and antioxidants).

When it comes to masks, things can differ a little depending on the mask in question. Wash-off masks are best applied post-cleanse, and pre-serum. Overnight masks are your last step, after your Skingredients Skin Protein, and washed off in the morning.

When it comes to facial spritz, you can use it post-cleansing or post-serum at night. You can use it after makeup, or throughout the day. Whenever, wherever. It’s always Spritz O’Clock somewhere.

Skingredients How-To Wrapped Up

Four Core Products, applied in order, and Mix + Match products for your particular skin concern: that’s Skingredients, demystified. If you’re ever confused, check your bottles – they’re numbered 01-04, and that ain’t just for decoration.

Skingredients is for you, skin-having hooman. Now, go forth and self-care!
